Celebrate the life and work of beloved artist Hiroshi Sueyoshi in an evening that brings art, culture, and conversation together at the museum. This special program begins with an intimate gallery conversation honoring Hiroshi’s remarkable career, followed by a deeper exploration of Japanese culture in our spacious reception hall.
Hiroshi’s wife, Jane Tierney, joined by ceramic artist Gayle Tustin, will reflect on his artistic journey and evolution as a potter. Their discussion will illuminate Hiroshi’s life in Wilmington as both an artist and a teacher, and the way his work seamlessly blended Eastern and Western influences. From traditional ceramic techniques to bold innovation, from complex design to deep spirituality, Hiroshi’s practice offers a powerful example of cultural dialogue expressed through form and material.
The evening continues with a screening of Matter of Reverence, a short documentary that provides rare insight into the artist’s philosophy and process. Following the film, guests are invited to the reception hall for an engaging conversation on Japanese culture. We are honored to welcome Dr. Ryan Lidster, Assistant Professor of Japanese at UNCW, and Kana Sahashi, Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) Coordinator at UNCW, who will offer cultural context and perspectives that enrich our understanding of Hiroshi’s work.
Enjoy music in the exhibition from 6-6:30 PM by the Lark Quartet, a blended ensemble with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Gayle Tustin is a non-representational artist. She works in a variety of mediums including clay, found objects, paint, and collage. She works from the surprise of Inspiration, coming from her studio environment, travel sketch books, nature, conversations, museum visits, found treasures, and more. Travel and international artist residencies have greatly influenced her work. She is one of the co-founders of No Boundaries International Artist Colony on Bald Head Island, NC.
Dr. Ryan Lidster’s work focuses on Japanese language learning, pronunciation, and how language ability is taught and assessed. He is deeply engaged in interdisciplinary and community-based programs that promote intercultural exchange through language and culture.
Kana Sahashi, originally from Gifu Prefecture in central Japan, offers cultural exchange programming for UNCW and the Wilmington community through the Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI). She teaches courses through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and helps expand academic and career pathways for students pursuing UNCW’s Japanese minor.
