About this Event
Join us on Sunday, May 10th from 9:30am-12pm for an introduction to the California Breeding Bird Atlas project. There will be a 45 minute information session with Q&A held in the reserve conference room followed by a guided hike focused on breeding bird behavior. We recommend downloading and installing the eBird mobile app prior to this workshop. Learn more about the California Breeding Bird Atlas Project and how to join at californiabirdatlas.org.
The winter birding season at the Reserve has been lively with bird song and courtship. The Common Yellowthroats have settled in the grassland and have been almost as vocal as the Song Sparrows. Red-tailed Hawks and a pair of White-tailed Kites have been spotted from the Visitor Center doing courtship flights. As spring approaches, the bird themed guided hikes and workshops at the Reserve will focus on breeding behavior and the California Breeding Bird Atlas project. In an effort to study and protect our state's high diversity of breeding bird species, the nonprofit California Bird Atlas (CBA) recently launched California’s first comprehensive statewide Breeding Bird Atlas (CA BBA), which will combine community science and targeted surveys to collect breeding bird data over a 5-year period. Join us on Sunday, May 10th to learn more about the CA BBA and how to get involved! This workshop will include an introduction to the project and how to participate, and a walk on the Reserve’s trails to practice submitted observations. New eBirder’s are welcome!
We will be meeting in the conference room located behind the visitor center at 1700 Elkhorn Road. The hike portion of the workshop will range between 1 - 1.5 miles with a 200ft elevation change.
Bring your binoculars or borrow some from us! All birding levels are welcome!
