will perform
the joyful single movement Wind Quintet by Manny Mendelson,
followed by Robert Muczynski’s edgy and animated Quintet for Winds.
The program will culminate with a world premiere performance
of Jeremy Gilien’s Woodwind Quintet;
its three movements are descriptively entitled Melodica, Meditation and Merrymaking.:
Playing around with a melodica (a small keyboard played by blowing air through a mouthpiece) provided the initial inspiration for this piece, although for years I had wanted to write something for this versatile combination of instruments which is so capable of producing the most kaleidoscopic colors.
The first movement, Melodica, begins with a jaunty theme in B flat major leading to a pastoral passage in the Dorian mode. The rustic mood continues into F and D major, spinning off into a central section which includes some Baroque procedures, including fugue, canon, and even a French Overture. The original theme reprises, and unfolds freely with syncopated rhythms, and virtuosic filigree in the flute and clarinet. The movement ends with further manipulation of the theme and a short coda.
The second movement, Meditation, set in slow 6/8 time, maintains a serene mood throughout, employing occasional mild dissonance with chromatic harmonies. It serves as an extended interlude to the more extroverted outer movements.
In the finale, Merrymaking, dance-like rhythms abound in an exuberant, modified rondo form beginning in 7/8 time, but then frequently changing meters.
My goal was to write a piece which would hold immediate appeal for a general audience, while remaining enjoyable yet challenging for musicians. I hope I have accomplished that!
