Cal Flyn is a writer and journalist from the Highlands of Scotland. She is the author of three nonfiction books, including Islands of Abandonment (2021), which won her the title of Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year (UK), the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing (US) and the E. M. Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Her third nonfiction book The Savage Landscape, released in May 2025, is a history of the idea of wilderness, told through a series of journeys to wild places from Antarctica to the Amazon. She recently completed a year's term as Distinguished Writer in Residence at Wesleyan University, Connecticut.
