A businessman puts his credit cards and briefcase in the trunk of his car, gets wildly drunk and wakes up to find a girl and nothing else. Thousands Like Us (aka Love The One You're With) was shot in Glasgow twenty five years ago in 2000. It was Palm Tree Universal's first feature film helmed by writer / director Robbie Moffat and jointly produced with Mairi Sutherland
Palm Tree partnered with The Big Issue and made the film from their offices in the old BT building in College Street. Robbie felt that homelessness was an important subject to be addressed, having seen the poverty around Glasgow at that time. The increase in homelessness was very visible. Twenty five years on, there are now record numbers of homeless people in Glasgow and other UK cities.
Thousands Like Us highlights the good and the bad of homelessness. Despite the risks of being vulnerable and shunned, the film shows that homeless life is generally transitory and not always bleak.
