About this Event

STARLING met at dance camp many years ago and have been jamming ever since. This long-distance trad folk duo consists of Mo Brachfeld (fiddle and feet) from Western Massachusetts and Jared Kirkpatrick (keys, mandolin and feet) from North Carolina. They deftly blend traditional styles from Appalachia, New England, Quebec, and Ireland with modern influences into contra classics and original tunes, performing those as well as harmony singing, "queer tunes," and percussive dancing across the country.

Charleston-based quartet CONTRAFORCE may be deeply rooted in traditional folk music and the contra dance scene, but when it comes to composing and recording their own tunes, they certainly don’t shy away from musical experimentation.Fiddler Andrae Raffield, Percussionish/handpan/saxophonist Joey Dorwart, guitarist Jimi “Two Nails” Peirano, and Vocalist Karin Mcquade have collaborated on old standards and new originals, working in and around the Celtic and Appalachian folk styles normally featured at contra dances.

CHRIS PAGE has called contra and ECD for two decades, across the countryfrom San Diego to Los Angeles. He’s also perpetrated over 200 contradance sequences, at least one of which you probably like. Hischoreographic study has gotten a bit out of hand, resulting in apublic database of 15,576+ dances, but who's counting? Chrisjudged a bad contra contest and won a NEFFA good contra contest, and tries not to get those two confused in his bio. Behind themike, Chris is seriously committed to not taking himself tooseriously and encourages the same of dancers.

JAMIE PLATT has been running sound for dances and concerts, mostly in the Washington, DC area, for many years. He is a regular at Glen Echo Park and specializes in all types of traditional music. He has also been running sound for a number of dance weekends and other events from Gulfport, FL to Columbus, OH. He has been a happy member of the Cabin Fever staff since 2008. Jamie’s approach has been to make each instrument and voice sound as close to natural as possible, work hard to make the musicians happy, and let them carry the show.
