About Janie…If I had to describe myself in one line it would be this: Jane of All Trades, Artist at Large. For a very long time I felt pressure to narrow my focus and pick one media to master but I just could not do it. I am not just a weaver or a painter or a clothing designer or a teacher. I am all of these and more.

By the time I entered college I was proficient in crochet, macrame, tatting, embroidery, beadwork and sewing. I began my college career with and emphasis in drawing and painting but switched half way though to textiles. It was at Berea College that I learned to weave and to dye fabric using shibori and batik. After college I added colored pencil painting, decorative painting, clothing design, basketry, beaded jewelry, spinning, kumihimo, bobbin lace, several forms of band weaving, shoe making to my list of trades.

I married soon after college and had my son and daughter and for the next 24 years was very fortunate to be a full time mom. While my children were growing up I continued to acquire new skills and perfect existing ones through study, research and workshops. During this time I also began teaching numerous and widely varied textile related classes to children and adults. It gives me great satisfaction to teach a student a new skill that brings them joy.

I still have a very deep need to learn about and do everything related to yarn and fabric. And I still love to draw and paint. And I love to teach. I have about 14 pans in the fire at all times ... and that’s just fine.
