Come join Button Poetry at Icehouse on October 27th to celebrate the release of Neil Hilborn’s newest poetry collection About Time. This night of poetry will feature special guests performances by Allison Broeren, Shane Hawley, Khary Jackson, Kyle Tran Myhre, & Ollie Schminkey!
Neil Hilborn returns with the poignant and profound collection About Time. Balancing between devastation and perseverance, About Time shares the struggle to maintain mental health during the recent global crises.
With his distinctly conversational tone and dark humor, Hilborn breaks down the cycle of mental illness—small improvements, setbacks, and the process of recovery. This collection fights against itself as the poems try to find a place for hope, love, and goodness in a lonely, terrifying world—ultimately, inspiring belief in and connection to all the small joys that we can find.
Fans new and old will be stunned by Hilborn’s third collection. Continuing in the legacy of his previous works, About Time is hot soup for the troubled soul and absolutely cannot be missed.
About your Features:
Neil Hilborn (he/him) is a best-selling author and, with over 150 million views to his credit, he is the most-watched poet ever. He has performed in 41 states and 8 countries, and in 2019 alone he drove coast to coast five times while on tour. His favorite touring moments are: crying while meeting a wombat in Australia; spending two weeks in Edinburgh at the Fringe Festival; meeting Dionne Warwick at the Smithsonian; and putting 12,000 miles on a minivan in two months with his fellow road goblin Mark. His favorite sandwiches come from: Primanti Bros in Pittsburgh, Black’s BBQ in Austin, one specific Publix in Tampa, and a torta truck he found while stranded in Pasco, Washington. One time on stage he accidentally punched the microphone and broke his wedding ring, and thanks to years of therapy he did not interpret this as a sign. His preferred stage entrance music is “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen, during which he walks very slowly. In addition to touring and writing he runs workshops on craft, performance, and how to apologize for ignoring texts. He and his wife live on a hobby farm outside Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they adopt too many animals.
Allison Broeren (she/her) is the Director of Word Sprout and co-owner of Strike Theater in Northeast Minneapolis. She has organized between 50-70 shows a year since 2006 in the Twin Cities. Allison teaches storytelling at Strike Theater, has been heard on the Moth Main Stage, MPR, The MN Book Awards, MN Fringe Festival, KFAI, The Tour de Fat MainStage, political fundraisers, local block parties, and coffee tables all through the land.

The City Pages has named her an artist to watch and awarded her Best Spoken Word Event. The Pioneer Press named her shows the Best Performance Opportunity. In 2013 she was named a Changemaker of the Year for her work on the Women of the World Poetry Slam. Allison loves a great story--both sharing and listening--and is so excited to have worked with this group of performers!
Shane Hawley (he/him) is a writer and performer from Saint Paul, Minnesota. A fixture in the spoken word poetry scene since 2001, and a 2010 National Poetry Slam Champion, he has spent the past decade focused mostly on humor writing and screaming jokes at people. He has performed all over the country and alongside many impressive artists, all of whom he met at summer camp and they’re from Canada, so you wouldn’t know them. He lives in the special corner of your heart that you reserve for extreme extroverts who are always trying a little too hard.
Khary Jackson is a writer, dancer and musician. Khary has been a recipient of generous grants, including the 2019 Jerome Artist Fellowship and 2022 McKnight Fellowship in Writing. Khary's poetry book, Any Psalm You Want, was published with Write Bloody Publishing in the spring of 2013.
Kyle "Guante" Tran Myhre (he/him) is a poet and activist whose work explores the relationships between narrative, power, and resistance. He’s performed at the United Nations, contributed to a Grammy-winning album, been a member of two National Poetry Slam championship teams, and visited countless colleges, conferences, and festivals, using spoken word and storytelling as doorways into critical dialogue. His most recent book, "Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough," is available now via Button Poetry.
Ollie Schminkey (they/them) is a non-binary transgender poet, artist, and organizer living in St. Paul, MN. They have spent the past decade coaching, mentoring, teaching classes, and running workshops for poets. They are the author of three chapbooks, as well as two full-length collections: Dead Dad Jokes (Button Poetry, 2021) which was shortlisted for both the Midwest Independent Publishers Association and the Eric Hoffer Grand Prize, and Where I Dry the Flowers (Button Poetry, June 2024). Their work has been featured everywhere from Poets.org to Frontier Poetry to Upworthy. When they’re not writing and performing poetry, they spend their time making creepy+cute pottery under the name Sick Kitty Ceramics. You can find them touring nationally, making music, or playing with their cat Pete, who is always trying to eat things he shouldn’t.
