About this Event

Butterflies of Coombs Dale

Meet in the car park by the sports ground in Stoney Middleton at 10.30am. We will walk about a mile down Coombs Dale to the area where butterflies are most numerous and search for about two hours, pausing for food and drink (if you bring it). You can return along the same route as and when you wish or we will return as a group at around 1.30am and drive in convoy to Longstone Edge, where we will search for more of the same species.

Target species: Dark Green Fritillary, Brown Argus, Common Blue, Small Copper, Small Heath, Small and Large Skipper, Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Speckled Wood, Brimstone, common 'Vanessids’ and 'Whites'; plus day-flying moths at Longstone Edge.

In Coombs Dale horseflies can be a problem, so insect repellent is advised.

The path in Coombs Dale is easy walking on fairly level ground. Some parts of Longstone Edge are more tricky, but the accessible parts have all the butterfly species.
