About this Event
Building the Conscious Therapeutic Alliance with Nat Kuhn, MD
Psychotherapy is hard. Effective psychotherapy is harder. Even the most motivated clients experience conflict when changing deeply ingrained patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior. Further, the therapeutic process triggers clients' attachment wounds and activates resistance within the client-therapist relationship. Building a collaborative working relationship is crucial for navigating these sometimes choppy waters. In this half-day seminar, Dr. Nat Kuhn, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, addresses key elements to building a collaborative working relationship. Using video recording of actual sessions, as well as discussion and didactic instruction, Dr. Kuhn will demonstrate how to navigate aspects of developing a strong therapeutic alliance including:
• Understanding the conscious therapeutic alliance, including goals, tasks and a collaborative working relationship
• Misalliance, therapist error, and recovery
• Misunderstanding the therapeutic relationship: transference resistance and counter-resistance
