Building Regional Resilience: How Wildfires Impact the Environment, Public Health, and the Economy

Join the Capital Region Climate Readiness Collaborative and the Cleaner Air Partnership for an in-person event focused on the the environmental, public health, and economic impacts of wildfires in the Capital Region on March 17th from 12:30 PM - 3 PM at the California Endowment located at 1414 K St #500, Sacramento, CA 95814, Adelante Room.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:

Wildfires are not only a threat to our forests and watersheds, but also to the health of our communities and the stability of the region's economy. A recent analysis by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Sacramento Metro Chamber shows that a major wildfire in the Sacramento area could result in $3.4 billion in damages, 12,000 job losses, and the displacement of over 4,000 residents. The economic toll includes nearly $1.5 million in lost production and $902,000 in lost income during recovery.

However, investing in wildfire resilience and preparedness can dramatically reduce these impacts. Strategic investments of $283 million could cut damages in half, saving over 6,000 jobs, preventing 3,000 residents from leaving, and preserving $794 million in local GDP and $478 million in income.

Wildfires destroy forests and destabilize watersheds critical for drinking water, agriculture, and hydroelectric power. Degraded watersheds face increased erosion, sedimentation, and water quality issues, making forest restoration and management essential for long-term regional resilience.

In addition, smoke from wildfires poses severe health risks, especially for children, seniors, pregnant people, and individuals with preexisting conditions. Prolonged exposure to particulate matter and toxic air pollutants can lead to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular issues, and even premature death. Wildfire smoke also exacerbates health disparities in vulnerable communities, underscoring the urgent need for public health interventions and air quality monitoring.

The economic toll of wildfires extends beyond immediate damage to include job losses, relocation, business closures, and long-term recovery challenges. Understanding the interplay between economic resilience and wildfire preparedness is a key to regional resilience and community stability.

Participants will gain valuable insights into the connections between wildfire preparedness, forest and watershed health, and strategies for reducing health and economic disparities.

Join us to learn how our region can prepare for and adapt to the growing threat of wildfires while advancing collaborative solutions that protect natural resources, protect public health, and strengthen the regional economy.
