Marina Roberts (she/her) is a DSA member and facilitator of the No ALPRs Coalition. She has over a decade of community organizing experience, having fought campaigns around labor, health justice, housing & homelessness, immigrant rights, and more. Her current work on mass surveillance alongside the No ALPRs Coalition contributed to the temporary pause of ALPR use in Austin, the blocking of AI surveillance in parks and pools, and the successful blocking of ALPRs in a number of municipalities throughout central Texas.
TALK SUMMARY:
Mass surveillance technologies have exploded in recent years, aided in part by expanded AI capabilities and a new frontier of domestic applications. While many of us feel more surveilled than before and are alarmed by the presence of ever-expanding surveillance in our lives, it's extremely common to encounter defeatist attitudes on this issue. What can we do about it? This discussion will focus on answering that question, exploring how to apply a community organizing framework to this issue and build enough power to slow and eventually defeat mass surveillance.
HOW TO ATTEND:
Our meetup is at FUTO Open Repair Workshop, 2410 San Antonio St, Austin, TX 78705. When you arrive, you go through the center door facing the street and up the stairs. We are in the big event hall on the 2nd floor.
There a few free parking spaces in front of the building, as well as metered street parking. There is also a UT Garage, San Antonio Garage, right next door, where parking is $3/hr.
