Building Great Soil and Sustainable Water OptionsFeaturing Speaker Doug Nesmith, Baylor Community Kitchen and Garden Advisor and Retired Professor from Baylor Department of Environmental Science
Have you been wanting to learn about how to ideally build great soil? This month, Doug Nesmith will be talking to us about just that! He will discuss soil horizons, structure, organic matter, water retention, and how to build that great soil.
Doug attended Texas A&M and earned a degree in Agronomy and then a Master's degree in Soil Chemistry. Among the many fascinating things he has worked on and studied, he has researched the effect of nutrient levels on crop diseases by evaluating growth regulators and harvest aids on the major crops.
In 2000, Doug was named the research manager for the new Helm Irrigation Research Center near Halfway, Texas and then in 2010 joined Baylor's Environmental Science Department, where he supervised teaching assistants, taught introductory ENV classes and also taught agroecology. Doug was involved with the proposal for the Baylor Community Garden and taught gardening classes from the garden inception until he retired in 2025.
