About this Event

Learn how modern cloud infrastructure is actually built by walking through the real steps required to stand up production-grade AWS environments.

This is a hands-on, technical session focused on how AWS works under the hood: networking, compute, storage, and traffic routing.

If you have ever wondered what really happens when people say “just deploy it to the cloud,” this session is for you.

What you will build

Together, we will walk through creating a complete AWS setup, including:

  • Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and networking fundamentals
  • Subnets, security groups, and access control
  • Compute resources (EC2 or containerized services)
  • Object storage and data persistence
  • Load balancers and traffic routing
  • Basic operational considerations and common pitfalls

You will see how these pieces fit together, why they exist, and where teams often get stuck in real projects.

Why this session matters

Most developers learn to write code but never fully understand the infrastructure it runs on. That gap becomes expensive as systems grow.

This session is designed to close that gap by showing the actual steps, decisions, and complexity involved in building cloud infrastructure properly.

You will leave with a clearer mental model of AWS and much stronger intuition for cloud architecture discussions.

Agenda

In this small-group technical session, participants will:

First 1.5 hours - Build core AWS infrastructure step by step, covering networking, compute, and storage fundamentals

Next 1.5 hours - Add load balancing, traffic flow, and operational considerations, and review common architectural mistakes

Last 30 minutes - Wrap-up, Q&A, and open discussion on real-world use cases and trade-offs

This is not an introductory cloud talk. It is a practical infrastructure session for people who want to understand how things actually work.

Who should attend
  • Software developers who deploy or plan to deploy applications
  • DevOps and platform engineers
  • CTOs, founders, and technical leaders
  • Cloud and infrastructure practitioners
  • Engineers who want to move beyond tutorials and abstractions

Participants should be comfortable working in a technical environment, but expert-level AWS knowledge is not required.

Communication

We will add you to a WhatsApp group closer to the event date.
The group will be used to help you access the Platform Calgary building (Boardroom #3) and to share code, materials, and related information.

Please keep an eye out for the WhatsApp group invite via your email. The group will likely be created one day before the event.
