Build your own personal worm composting system with the Worm Queen.
About this Event

Class Description: Vermiculture, or the raising of earthworms, is a great way to recycle organic waste into high quality soil for your garden. Join Mel, the Worm Queen, for her most popular class! In this workshop we assemble a worm composting system, add bedding, food, grit, and worms. As we assemble our worm bins we will discuss the biology, rearing, and husbandry of eisenia fetida, or the red wiggler. We will go over everything you need to know to successfully worm compost at home; including how worms eat, digest, and mate as well as all the benefits the whole process offers your home and garden. Go home with your own fully functional and ready to use worm bin and your own colony of approximately 200 red wigglers. Containers, worms, and bedding will be provided. Please bring a handful of plant based food scraps from breakfast or dinner to add to your worm bin. Food waste will not be provided so please bring your own fresh scraps. You will take home a fully assembled worm bin, stocked with approximately 200 red wigglers, ready to start composting your food scraps, capable of composting 3 to 7 pounds of scraps a week almost immediately!

About your teacher: Melissa Corichi founded her company, Let it Rot in 2015, while attending the Harriet Wilkes Honors College. Melissa is a certified Safe Compost Operator and trained under one of the leading experts in vermiculture, Rhonda Sherman. In 2018 Melissa received her Permaculture Designer Certification. Featured in the Palm Beach Post, Biocycle, on WPTV and The Weather Channel, Melissa, or The Worm Queen, is considered an expert in her field of vermiculture and food waste reduction in application to sustainable farming and gardening. With her company Let it Rot, she has composted over one million pounds of food waste in the last decade. She ran Palm Beach County's only commercial composting service for 8 years prior to being shut down by Palm Beach County's Solid Waste Authority. In more recent years, Melissa has dedicated her time to Pollinator gardens promoting native and exotic plants that support all species of pollinator organisms. Recently she has added poultry to her one acre farm in Loxahatchee, Fl.
