Historic Rock Ford's Fashions Lecture Series welcomes Chloe Chapin as she presents “Buff & Blue: How George Washington Fashioned the Revolution.” Was George Washington America’s first fashion designer? George Washington designed his own military uniform, and within fifteen years, men across America, England, and France were copying his look. In this talk, fashion historian Chloe Chapin will unpack the fascinating history of the iconic “buff and blue,” and how it had such a lasting impact on American style.This presentation will begin at 2 PM in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Visitors may park in the area located behind the Barn. Prior to the lecture, attendees may visit the Snyder Gallery and our 2026 Focus Exhibit. The Snyder Gallery closes at 4 PM.
About the Presenter: In her forthcoming book, “Suitable: The Sartorial Revolution and the Fashioning of Modern Men,” designer and historian Chloe Chapin investigates the materiality, manufacture, and meaning behind men’s suits between the American Revolution and the Civil War. Chapin is a fashion historian with a PhD from Harvard. Previously, she costumed rock musicals on Broadway.
