~Gino Dal Soler/Blow Up Magazine

Curranโs music invokes swarming natural forces, looking for the borderline between the real and the sublime and, maybe, the supernatural

Adele Pappalardoโs greatest asset is her voice: inimitable, malleable, dripping with passion and personality. The transition to piano-based songs on Impermanence has allowed that voice to flourish, which in turn has opened up new and intensely personal ways of writing and presenting songs. The resulting album transcends its varied influences and becomes a wonderful and, at times, cathartic work of art, brimming with confidence and bursting with important questions about womanhood, metaphysics and music.

Adele Hโs 2018 debut, Civilization, was largely a cappella, the Italian singerโs voice looped and massed and harmonized into swelling crescendos, with only a little percussion for company. This time around, she adds some shadowy, minor key piano to her arsenal. The piano adds rhythm and solidity to songs, but it is still the voice that takes precedence. It floats and loops and flutters, letting wordless โooh-ooh-oohsโ vault across the scale and blowing workmanlike words like glass into fantastic shapes. These works are moody and introspective. You feel almost as if youโre eavesdropping on some private reverie. Adele H muses on the personalโfamily, children, female empowermentโand explores the shape and possibility within each melodic phrase. She might be thinking it through as the tape rolls. The music comes out fresh and unstudied and lovely.

Where Adele H's 2017 album Civilization was built from vocal loops and percussive backing, 'Impermanence' is made up of nine songs for piano and largely unadorned voice. When the title track runs counter to this, layering her vocals, it mainly serves to demonstrate that it's not especially needed. On 'Women's Power' the playing is minimalist, the vocal style melismatic, 'April' is more cascading, with Pappalardo approximating the sort of blowsy vulnerability endemic to 2000s R&B. Later, she stretches for octaves and drops to an almost-mumblewith the รฉlan of a Sade or Nina Simone. 'Bubble of Gold' is maybe the song where the various strands of Impermanence coalesce most successfully, but 'Lucia'- a quasi-blues number with barely-there piano - sounds legitimately, emotionally crushed, and is the album's high point in that respect.

Produced by the Italy-based American songwriter Buck Curran, 'Impermanence' features Curran's Italian wife, Adele, on piano and vocals, recorded live in the studio with minimal overdubs and a lot of reverb. The couple were inspired by early-'70s songwriting classics - Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Nina Simone - and create a suitably haunting atmosphere through Adele's strong, echoey chords and powerful voice. It's secular gospel of the finest kind, most notably on the rich title track and songs like 'Bubble of Gold' and 'Rise and Fall'. Curran has recorded his own, very different, album of experimental synth soundscapes, The Long Distance, which is available through Eiderdown Records.
