“ A paintbrush is a paintbrush is a paintbrush.”

– Duke A. Barnstable

Satellite Gallery is pleased to present BRUSH WORKS, another New York solo exhibition by painter Jamie Zeccola. Known for his playful exploration of Art Brut, absurd comedy, and satirical narratives, Zeccola’s latest series is an homage to the paintbrush; a tool that he uses to push the boundaries of gestural art to the edges of the canvas and the frame. By willing the paint into action, and to revel in material discovery, he simplifies the search for meaning by letting his paintbrush do all the talking.

His blended use of layers upon layers of acrylic and oil paint, with other odd materials, captures the vitality of action painting with thick brushstrokes and color field confidence. Zeccola reimagines the paintbrush, not as a symbol of some divine spirit, but as a human tool, which he uses to reveal his visions to the world. A place where elements of assemblage and happy accidents meet in the middle of hard work and lady luck. First, he must paint them, after that, they become precious objets d’art.

Unified by neon colors and glossy frames, this collection offers a visual feast for the eyes, the absurd and the real come together in such works as The Bronze Age, Brown Sugar, and The Underground, as they transform everyday objects into expressions of personal intimacy and self-reflection. The new paintings are populated with diverse ephemera – a chess board, coffee cup, subway card, keys– which brings them to life, like in a diary, they are the tiny details from the past that one always remembers.

This body of work reveals a painter’s efforts to connect eye to hand and canvas to frame. Intimate in scale, but big in abstract expression, the frames have been deconstructed and rebuilt again, or nailed together, while others are left as is and repainted. The frames are just as important to the overall look and mood of the artwork as what’s on the canvas; a frame is the backbone of the painting, it makes it so much stronger, in essence, it completes the square. A good frame is a good frame is a good frame.

Zeccola’s paintings fight against conformity, style, and technique, freely moving between his subject matter and materials. These exaggerated shaped canvases are full of vibrant colors, raw emotion, and the pure joy of painting. “In a nutshell, they are paintbrush wall sculptures, mixed with abstract painting, some fancy frames, bottles of red wine, and consumed by a fire in the belly,” says Zeccola.
