Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival presents
Merle Collins, author of Ocean Stirrings: A Work of Fiction in Tribute to Louise Langdon Norton Little, Working Mother and Activist, Mother of Malcolm X and Seven Siblings
In conversation with Rachel Oneika Phillips
The Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival (BCLF), now in its fifth year, celebrates Caribbean literature and its history of storytelling year-round. BCLF aims to amplify the excluded stories of Caribbean people who have long contributed to and built the diverse heritage of the wider North American diaspora. Greenlight is honored to partner with BCLF to host author Merle Collins presenting Ocean Stirrings. Composed of both fiction and poetry, the book brings alive the almost hidden life of Louise Langdon Little, the mother of Malcolm X, including her years as a child and adolescent in Grenada, her years as a young married woman in Canada and the USA, and the tragedy of her incarceration in a psychiatric hospital in Kalamazoo. In the process, Collins gives a brilliant portrayal of how some were able to turn the propagandistic and racist nature of colonial education on its head. Merle discusses her work with Broadway performer Rachel Oneika Phillips, along with a reading and book signing.
