This is definitely a weekend for the crafters who love archaeology! Over this two day workshop you’ll work with a wide variety of materials and try a selection of amazing crafts. We will also explore some of the amazing archaeology of the Bronze Age and how archaeologists know what we know!
You’ll work with James to cast a bronze axe head that can be cleaned and decorated. Using bronze tools, you’ll then carve and shape a wooden handle for your freshly cast axe head. Using rawhide, you will finish the axe by binding it tightly onto the handle. The group will also explore how tools were work hardened and even decorated.
In the other half of the weekend, you’ll work with Em to carve, shape and drill some of the valuable and exotic materials people coveted in the Bronze Age. Amber, shale, jet, tin and copper will be your raw materials to create replicas of jewellery, belt fittings and ornamentation that were used to show status thousands of years ago.
The weekend will start with an introductory talk to contextualise the Bronze Age and some of the crafts covered during the weekend.
