The Helper’s Paradox: preventing burnout in those who careThis session is for the helper.
Drawing from her lived experience of midlife burnout, Shannon Swales reflects on the questions she did not know to ask at the time: What should I have been looking out for? Why didn’t I recognise the signs earlier? And what does the research already tell us about preventing burnout in helping professions?
Grounded in contemporary literature and informed by conversations with others who have lived it, the session will explore early warning signs, why they matter, and the interplay between individual patterns (such as perfectionism and identity fusion with the helper role) and systemic pressures (including emotional labour and workload expectations). Attention will also be given to cultural context and the ways burnout is often minimised or rationalised within society.
Lived experience will be explicitly linked to current evidence and structured reflection. Participants will be invited to consider what to look out for in themselves, why early recognition is protective, and which evidence-informed practices genuinely support sustainability in long-term mental health work.
The aim is to help the helper recognise erosion early — and build a professional life that can be sustained, not survived.
