https://linktr.ee/brisbanelpclubMetal: it’s the red-headed stepchild of the music sphere, often cast aside because it’s “too extreme”, either in sound, content, or ideology.
But for one brief moment in 1986, metal rode high above all other genres through the efforts of thrash metal, specifically its “big four”, and none of those bands rose higher than the 163 million selling Bay Area thrashers, Metallica. And nowhere did they scale the heights of critical and commercial success for music as heavy as they did on 1986’s ‘Master of Puppets’.
Often hailed as the crowning achievement of not just thrash metal, not even ALL metal, but of music in general, come along on May 21, to hear Dylan wax lyrical about - possibly - the band that deeply changed his teenage brain chemistry, and why metal kicks ungodly amounts of ass.
~~~~ This month's presentation will be facilitated by Dylan! ~~~~~~
This session will also coincide with e&b's ramen night by Rina - if you wish you support your local community music venues, consider buying a beer and a bowl of ramen to help keep the scene alive!
----- What is LP Club? -----
LP-Club is a community-focused group of music lovers based in Magandjin/Brisbane where our main focus is discussing all things music. We meet once a month - Currently this is on the third Thursday of each month.
Each session revolves around a specific work of music, typically taken from an online list such as Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All Time, or the /mu/ core list. Think of it like a book club, but instead of reading a book, we listen to an album. Each session is also supplemented with audio and visual materials relating to the work, often including a copy of the album on vinyl for listening during the session.
----- Where is LP Club? -----
Currently, echo&bounce in Woolloongabba is home to LP Club. It is a record shop, bar and community event space just by the Mater Hospital.
----- Accessibility -----
Our session will take place in the basement space, which is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
----- How can I get involved? -----
You can get involved in a few different ways:
- Come to one of our monthly events - We choose different albums to talk about each month, so eventually there will be something for you. We also encourage music lovers to come even when talking about an album that you may not have heard of or may not like at all - we want to hear your thoughts too, even if you don't like the music.
- Join our Facebook group and engage with us! We would love to hear your thoughts on music:
We also have an Instagram: @brisbanelpclub
- Host a session! If you'd be interested in hosting a session on an album you love, come and speak to the hosts at one of our in person events.
----- Is there anything I need to do to prepare for this event? -----
If you would like to come to a session, all you need to do is listen to the album before we meet - at least once, but ideally another few times - it's also a good idea to write down any specific thoughts you may have while listening - how did this album make you feel? Do you have any specific memories associated with the music? When was the first time you heard this band/album? and so on. We also encourage 'active listening' - sitting somewhere quiet with no distractions is the best way to listen to the album - that way, it has your full attention.
You're also welcome to do some research of your own about the artist/band/album beforehand. The session will cover most of the major points, but we won't stop you from doing your own deep dive yourself if you're into that - it will hopefully make for more riveting conversation on the day.
