About this Event

Walk Starts: Outside 'All Bar One' Tower of London, 14 Byward Street, London EC3R 5BA (opposite All Hallow's by the Tower). We will be standing wherever the shadiest side is.

Walk Ends: Bank Station (where there are toilets and baby change in The Royal Exchange if you need them at the end of the walk).

With stop after about an hour for lunch & baby change at The Monument where you will be given 45 minutes to go and get lunch of your choice and feed/change baby. There is a community baby change at the community toilets inside The Monument pub (I will show you). These community toilets are agreed for the use of the public by The City of London and you are not obligated to buy food and drink there.

Winner of 'Best Parent Activity' at the 'Bablands Awards', 'Bring Your Baby' Guided London Walks are sensitively devised to suit parents and carers of even the tiniest babies to enjoy London’s history. We can stop whenever you like to feed and change - without the stress of feeling you are holding up the group. Because every participant brings their baby, patience and baby’s needs are at the forefront of each walk.

You are welcome to bring friends and family who do not also have a baby (every adult needs a ticket).

Description:

This walk takes place on the anniversary of day 4 of the Great Fire of London, which burned from 2nd September - 6th September 1666.

Samuel Pepys was the son of a tailor who rose up through society to become an important administrator at The Royal Navy Offices. He also kept a diary for a number of years, and it is this that tells us many enlightening things about what happened in London during The Great Plague of 1665 and The Great Fire of London of September 1666, as well as revealing much about life in London at this time.

This guided walk starts near Seething `Lane where Pepys lived, worshipped and is buried. You will get to see inside this church and his memorial. The walk also visits these locations...

- The Monument to the fire near Pudding Lane, where the fire broke out in the bakery of Thomas Farriner.

- The actual location of Pepys' home and the Navy Offices where he worked.

- The church where Pepys and his wife Elizabeth are buried - along with over 300 plague victims.

- London Bridge, and where Pepys watched the fire burning from the river Thames as people scurried to rescue their belongings and get to boats.

- Cobbled streets in the original pre-fire locations.

- A hidden-away tranquil churchyard and gardens of a church destroyed by the fire (and WW2 bombs) - it so pretty that it is frequently used for wedding photos.

- The oldest church in London, where Pepys watched the fire from its tower.

- Locations where Pepys writes about witnessing plague victims, the fire burning, and people fleeing their properties carrying their belongings.

- Numerous ancient alleyways and courtyards, one home to a coffee house that Pepys wrote about in 1660.

- And more...

Babies and toddlers will love looking up at buildings, so this is also a great sensory experience.

If on the day of the walk we are forecast to have very bad weather, I may have to postpone the walk. If it's a bit of light rain we will cope!

Every walk follows the usual health and safety guidelines, such as crossing at traffic lights where possible and having hazards pointed out to you at the start and along the route.

There may be times we have to stand in direct sunlight (although I will always choose shade where possible). Please bring all the necessary sun protection for yourself and your child.

It is recommended you bring appropriate drinks and snacks for the duration of the walk.

I will contact you with booking confirmation after you book. I will supply my mobile number in case of emergencies or in case you are running late. I will also ask you to provide me with a mobile number so you can be contacted for the purposes of the walk, but this is *not for marketing purposes*. Please note that if you are more than a few minutes late I may ask you to catch up with us.

If you like the look of any of my walks, but would prefer to book me privately, please make enquiries at [email protected]. This may particularly be the case if you have people interested who do not have babies. I also run a shorter scavenger hunt version of this walk for schools if you are a teacher!

Important notes about booking:

- Please feel free to invite baby-free friends.

- Children are the responsibility of the parent or guardian, and must be monitored by them at all times.
