Breaking the Box: Indigenous Writers Talk Craft
This is a free event, but registration is required.
How can writers push back against arbitrary labels that fail to recognize the full complexity of their identities or engage with their writing on a deeper level? Speaking from across multiple genres, Indigenous playwright Madeline Sayet (Where We Belong), novelist Waubgeshig Rice (Moon of the Turning Leaves), and moderator Nick Martin will speak to the limiting and generalizing nature of the “Native lit” label, the ways their work actively indigenizes craft, and their chosen genres.
The 2024 PEN World Voices Festival, the 20th anniversary of the festival, will be a celebration of world literature and free expression. Over four days, over 100 writers from nearly 30 countries will be featured in engaging talks, panels, readings, and performances in New York City and greater Los Angeles.
