Dr Tim Cooper AM is a fifth-generation brewer and former Managing Director of Coopers Brewery, joining the family business in 1990 after an earlier career in medicine. As Managing Director from 2002 to 2025, he led significant expansion at the Regency Park site. Now Chief Brewer and Board Member, he continues to contribute to the industry and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008.

About our guest speaker

A fifth-generation brewer, Tim Cooper, began professional life as a doctor after graduating from the University of Adelaide in 1980. He practised hospital medicine, mostly in the UK, and, in 1990, completed a doctorate in Medicine in Bristol. Tim also studied Brewing Science at the University of Birmingham before joining the family company in 1990.

After starting in the brewery as Technical Manager, Tim became responsible for Operations in 1993. Tim completed an MBA at the University of Adelaide and became a director of Coopers in 1997. From 1999, he oversaw the development of the new Coopers Brewery at Regency Park and became Managing Director in early 2002.

Under Tim’s leadership, some $400 million has been invested at the site, including the Visitor Centre that opened in 2024. Comprising a restaurant, three bars, an expansive outdoor plaza, a dedicated tasting room, an interactive history display, a microbrewery and distillery, and an underground stillage capable of housing over 4,500 whisky barrels.

Resigning from the position of Managing Director in 2025 after 23 years, today, Tim retains his title of Chief Brewer and Board Member and continues to provide his input on brewing and technical matters.

Dr Cooper has been a director of the Brewers’ Association of Australia since 2002, and recently stepped down as Chair, a position he held for 5 years.

Tim was appointed a trustee of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation in 2024 and elected as Chair in 2025.

Dr Cooper served as Deputy President and President of the International Institute of Brewing and Distilling (HQ London) in 2016-19.
