About this Event
Bread Machine by Rick Schmidt - brief review - The latest version of Bread Machine (I saw an earlier version a few months back), the new film by veteran indie filmmaker Rick Schmidt - is probably one of the most mainstream accessible movies in his career. The story - a family who lost their house to the California fires try to get back on their feet by starting a home based bread baking business while staying with a relative. It's still an unusual Rick Schmidt movie - plays like a blend of fiction and documentary with characters addressing the camera directly with life stories - while the main story develops. Good cinematography, interesting desaturated/almost log type look in the movie - reflects the real world effect that Schmidt is trying to achieve (but still fiction-cinematic, not a heavy doc look or feel). Well directed, with realistic performances by the cast. A warm, unusual indie film. 8/10
