What is it?
Summer schools are a great opportunity for students and others to further develop their skills. However, the education system is not always a suitable place for everyone to develop in. Think about various marginalized groups in terms of race, gender, cultural background, sexuality and ability. In addition, well-being does not receive attention in the educational system, but it is as important as the intellect to prepare you as a resilient person. The Braver Spaces Summer School, organized by: Braver Spaces Antwerp, WeDecolonizeVUB and WITS University Fine Arts Department, Johannesburg is organized to accommodate those shortcomings.
Why it is necessary: enforce and give tools to students navigating higher education
This summer school is to give racialized people from various marginalized communities the skills and know-how to navigate through the education system, develop a sense of belonging, and selfhood. This will be achieved by valorising the knowledge, know-how, practices and beliefs within these racialized communities. Participants will acquire skills to use their own positionality as an input to educate themselves, conduct research and use in their (education) journey. Participants will learn the importance of their own stories, the importance of centering the histories that come from their communities. The participants will also learn how to build community solidarity and embody practices in ways that will make them more respondent to the often-grueling study and/or workload some of them have. In addition, well-being will be an important aspect of the Summer School with mental health specialists and embodiment practitioners present. It will be about creating braver spaces, nourishing self and expanding communities of understanding.
