About this Event

Join us for the April installment of Brains Uncorked, a live event series where three scholars share powerful, thought-provoking talks, each just 10–15 minutes long.
This is not a traditional academic lecture. Hosted in a relaxed bar setting, Brains Uncorked challenges three scholars to deliver concise and compelling talks and invites attendees to explore bold ideas while enjoying a drink and good company. The format is simple: no slides or dense jargon, just clear and thought-provoking insights designed to spark meaningful conversation. Expect fresh perspectives, surprising connections, and discussions that will stay with you well after the night ends.

Where does Wealth come from?
Host: Dr. Alfredo Carlos

Info: People often talk about wealth as if it’s a magical thing that just happens. You often hear “To be successful all you need to do is work hard” or “All you need to do is invest!”, but more often than not, the hardest working people in our society aren’t the wealthiest. Dr. Carlos will dive into where wealth actually come from and how billion-dollar companies rake in that profit.

🕑: 07:20 PM
Linguistics Community Collaboration
Host: Dr. Iara Mantenuto

Info: What does it mean to do community-based work in linguistics, and who does it serve? In this talk, Dr. Mantenuto will explore the challenges of preserving languages in communities affected by colonization and the dominance of larger languages, where different groups often have different goals. She will share examples from her work with two Mixtec communities, focusing on efforts to support projects led by community members themselves. Her approach centers community voices and rethinks language revitalization as a collaborative and sustainable process.

🕑: 07:35 PM
Built to Bear Babies
Host: Dr. Jeanelle Uy

Info: Growing a human comes with some serious anatomical challenges: our abdominal organs being pushed, contorted, or stretched when there is a growing baby taking over the space. Human babies are also unusually large for an animal of our size and often measuring 110% the size of our pelvic canal when they are born. How did we get here and how did we evolve to handle it? Dr. Uy will explain how, from the shape of our pelvis, the size of our intestines, the configuration of our ribs, and the curvature of our spine, our bodies are built to bear babies.
