Dear Friends of Poetry,On Thursday, November 6th, Poetry Night will feature the poet and author Brad Buchanan. We meet at 7 p.m. inside the spacious John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street in Davis, and we hope you can join us!
Our featured reader of poetry and fiction for November 6 will be Brad Buchanan.
Brad Buchanan is a lifelong chess fan, student of chess history and culture, and online chess addict. In a former life, he taught English Literature at Sacramento State University until his retirement in 2016. His poetry, short fiction and scholarly articles have appeared in more than 200 journals, and he has published four book-length collections of poetry, three academic books and a medical memoir.
Brad Buchanan was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma in February 2015, and underwent a stem cell transplant in 2016, which involved a lengthy recovery and temporary vision loss. He is currently in remission, though he suffers from graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). When he isn’t writing, or hanging out with his daughters, he facilitates recurring online Writing As Healing workshops through the UC Davis Cancer Center, the Sacramento Society for the Blind, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Sacramento author Brad Buchanan brings the psychological tension and strategic intrigue of chess to life in Spy’s Mate, a gripping Cold War thriller inspired by his lifelong love of chess and written during his recovery from a life-altering medical crisis. If The Queen’s Gambit proved anything, it’s that chess can be as riveting as any battlefield, and in Spy’s Mate, the stakes are just as high.
Doors and open-mic signups open at 6:30 p.m.; the featured reader begins at 7 p.m.; open mic starts at 8 p.m. Open mic performers will be asked to limit what they share to two items or four minutes, whichever is shorter. The open mic list is typically full by 6:45 p.m. People who show up early to help set up chairs will always earn a spot on the open mic list. We expect open mic favorites Michael Gallowglas, Mercedes Ibañez, Joe Bacchus, and Allegra Silberstein to perform.
