Since the launch of this project, The People United and Landcare Sorell and Surrounds have organised two workshops per month to remove boxthorn from the Esplanade side of the foreshore at Midway Point. With the size of working bees growing every month, we have now removed enough of the boxthorn to start burning the piles. We are excited to announce that we are going to trial using a biochar reactor to burn the piles and create charcoal, which can be added to the garden to improve soil health. A big thank you to Hobart resident, Bill, who will be supplying the biochar reactor and assisting us on the day. Our first trial will be on Saturday April 12 at 1pm on the foreshore, near the corner of Bay Rd and the Esplanade (weather dependent).
We are liaising with the Midway Point fire brigade to ensure everything is done safely and we will be delivering flyers to local letterboxes soon to make people aware of what we are planning.
Anyone is very welcome to join us where you can meet our volunteers and see biochar making in action. You can the making local biochar below.
