Working from a selection of eucalyptus leaves, you will learn how to compose, draw and paint from observation, using watercolour, to create a botanical painting that reflects an understanding of the subject whilst capturing the beauty of the plant.
Karen, a botanical artist, will ease you into the workshop with some playful drawing exercises, to lead you into observational drawing, looking at the different shape and direction of the leaves; and creating interesting compositions on the page. With one to one support and class demonstrations, you will experiment with different watercolour techniques from glazing, building up depth through layers, to wet-in-wet to create textures. Karen will guide you in accurate colour mixing, with a focus on mixing greens, to paint your eucalyptus leaves. During the session you will familiarize yourself with the materials and tools needed for botanical art and the techniques used, slowly building up layers of paint to create luminosity and depth.
