Join Dr. Donna J Nicol and moderator Dr. Tonia Harvard-Dew for a discussion of Dr. Nicol’s book Black Woman on Board: Claudia Hampton, The California State University, and the Fight to Save Affirmative Action. Dr. Nicol and Dr. Harvard-Dew will discuss the legacy of the first African American trustee at California State University, whose educational career began here in Chicago.
Donna J. Nicol, PhD is the Associate Dean of Personnel and Curriculum in the College of Liberal Arts and a Professor of History at California State University Long Beach. Her research focuses on race, philanthropy, and U.S. higher education. She has published opinion columns on racism in philanthropy for Al Jazeera Digital.
Dr. Tonia Harvard-Dew is the Union Professional Issues Director of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. A former middle school teacher with the Chicago Public School system, she currently conducts research on educational issues and lends her voice to educational policy tables across Illinois.
