About this Event
Book launch with Tash Walker & Adam Zmith - The Log Books
Uncover four decades of LGBTQ+ life through handwritten records kept by volunteers at Switchboard, a queer helpline operating since 1974. Discovered in a crawlspace at the organisation’s offices, the logbooks document calls from people seeking support, from questions about coming out to experiences of family rejection, discrimination and arrest.
Authors Tash Walker and Adam Zmith came of age during the era of Section 28, when schools and councils were legally prevented from “promoting” homosexuality. Reading the logs, and in some cases speaking to those involved, offered a way to understand both the everyday realities of queer life in the past and how they connect to the present.
This event will explore the archive behind The Log Books, the process of working with personal and often sensitive material, and what these records reveal about queer lives, care and community over the last forty years.
After the conversation, there will be a chance for a Q&A and book signing with the authors.
