Romanian-born Diana Radovan gives voice to the immigrant experience and previously untold stories from behind the Iron Curtain in her hybrid, experimental, kaleidoscopic, polyphonic memoir on personal and familial identity. Searching for herself, belonging, and purpose, she keeps on turning the kaleidoscope that is memory and life, echoing into both past and future in a lyrical, deeply intimate confession.
Diana Radovan PhD ELS is a Romanian-born author living in Germany and writing in English. She is a Best of the Net nominee for her hybrid essay, "On The Way." She has been publishing her multi- and cross-genre writing internationally since 2004, in English, German, and Romanian. Her creative work is a blend of magical realism, nonfiction, poetry, and imagery, dealing with writing between languages, the possibilities and boundaries of language, political oppression, intergenerational trauma, and the immigrant experience. She lives in the Bavarian village of Lenggries, on the banks of the Isar, between two mountain ranges, and teaches a class on kaleidoscopic narratives at Beyond Form Creative Writing.
“Radovan’s debut family memoir explores intergenerational trauma against the backdrop of postwar Romania (...) Using diary entries, poems, photographs, and essays, the author cobbles together a family history out of fragments, effectively reflecting the shattered nature of lives under and after authoritarianism (...) Radovan’s writing has a lyrical quality throughout, whether it takes the form of poetry or prose, offering readers an incantatory blend of the remembered, the overheard, and the imagined (...) A chimeric remembrance that delves into the legacy of Romania’s troubled past.” - Kirkus Reviews
