This book examines how the international order is evolving under pressure from populist leaders who challenge global institutions and mobilize against the “global elite.” It explores how international organizations – often seen as passive – act strategically to resist these pressures, using four key approaches: appeasing or sidelining populists, and appeasing or sidelining constituents. Drawing on new data and innovative qualitative evidence, the talk considers how these strategies strengthen global governance and their implications for institutional legitimacy, accountability, and the future of international cooperation.
