About this Event
Join us to celebrate the launch of The Great Trek of the Transport Party, Mexico (1825–26): A Tale of Tragedy and Triumph by Dr Sharron P. Schwartz, a significant new publication supported by the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.
This special event forms part of the 20th anniversary celebrations marking the inscription of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The anniversary also marks the bicentenary of Cornish steam technology reaching Mexico - an innovation that transformed silver mining and left a lasting global legacy.
Drawing on newly discovered archival sources, The Great Trek presents the most comprehensive account to date of the extraordinary transportation of 1,500 tons of mining machinery from Cornwall to the silver mines of Real del Monte in Mexico. The book reveals a remarkable story of ambition, endurance, and technological innovation, highlighting a shared chapter in Cornish and Mexican industrial history.
The evening will explore the research behind the book, celebrate its publication, and reflect on the international significance of mining innovation originating from the heart of Cornwall.
Refreshments will be provided.
