How can design move beyond simply including more people and instead fundamentally rethink who design is for?On 16 April, Professor Yanki LEE will launch her new publication 'Designing AS People – Beyond Ableism, Practising Universal Design Otherwise' at Kolding School of Design.
The book explores how design practice can move beyond accessibility as a technical requirement and instead be grounded in a deeper understanding of human diversity and shared responsibility.
Since 2021 Yanki Lee has worked with colleagues and students at Kolding School of Design's Lab for Social Design to embed Universal Design into research, teaching and practice. This collaboration — developed together with the Bevica Fonden — has led to initiatives such as participation in the Bevica Scholarship Programme, the Universal Design Awards, and new teaching formats that challenge traditional approaches to design.
As Camilla Ryhl, Director of Research at the Bevica Foundation and head of Universal Design Hub, puts it:
“Yanki Lee not only explains what Universal Design is and what it can offer — she presents a method for practising it. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to integrate Universal Design into their own practice.”
With renewed support from the Bevica Foundation, the collaboration will continue to grow with the shared ambition that Universal Design becomes not a separate track, but a fundamental approach to design education, research and practice.
