Out of the museum and into the wild, BOAT by photographer Katherine Knight creates a beautiful, unique, and uncanny record of maritime model boats, accompanied by first accounts by both model creators and those that love this once prevalent and now fading craft.
Join Katherine in conversation with artist Max Dean at the book launch for a behind the scenes delve into the breathtaking images and stories of BOAT. See how a model makes its transformation from artifact to photograph, along with excerpt readings from this instant Maritime classic.
This event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase. Stephen Bulger Gallery is accessible.

KATHERINE KNIGHT is a photographer and filmmaker who is particularly recognized for her landscape-based photographic works and documentary films on art and culture. Through her film company Site Media, Knight creates award-winning films on artists and creative process in relation to experiences of place that have played worldwide through festivals, television broadcast and post secondary distribution. Knight’s photographic works are held in many public and corporate collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Museum London, Global Affairs Canada, and the Canada Council Art Bank. She received the Duke and Duchess of York Prize from the Canada Council recognizing excellence in Photography. Knight lives in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

MAX DEAN is an artist who works with ideas, concepts and emotions visually. His kinetic and interactive sculptural installations are exhibited and collected internationally. Trained as an art historian Max’s work reflects his comfort and ingenuity in working and mixing both digital and analog technologies. One of his best-known artworks, The Robotic Chair, a generic-looking wooden chair with the capacity to fall apart and put itself back together, was featured as part of Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry touring exhibition “Robot Revolution”. Max is a recent recipient of the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts.
