About the Author:
Leanora Benjamin, a Brooklyn native, has always been a storyteller at heart. Growing up as the youngest of ten children in the lively, chaotic streets of Brooklyn, Leanora found her escape in the world of her imagination. Amid the noise and bustle, she would often find herself staring off into space, crafting stories in her mind and scribbling them down on any scrap of paper she could find.
After moving to North Carolina, where she has lived for over 20 years, Leanora built a successful career in finance and banking. Yet, the dream of becoming a creative writer never left her. Writing was her outlet, her way of making sense of the world around her, especially during those formative years in Brooklyn.
Now, at the age of 50, Leanora is ready to share her gift with the world. Her journey from a little girl with big dreams in Brooklyn to a woman who has lived a full and varied life is a testament to her resilience and passion. Leanora's stories are a reflection of her experiences, filled with the richness of her upbringing and the lessons learned along the way.
Synopsis of “Be Quiet, Little Black Girl”
“Be Quiet, Little Black Girl” is a poignant and deeply personal exploration of identity, trauma, and the journey to reclaim one’s voice. The story follows the protagonist, a Black woman, as she navigates the complex layers of her past, shaped by the constant admonition to stay silent and suppress her true self. From a young age, she was taught to hide her emotions and conform to the expectations of others, leading to a life where her inner child, stifled and unheard, struggles to break free.
As she reflects on her experiences, the narrative delves into the impact of generational trauma, societal expectations, and the internal battles that come with being a Black woman in a world that often demands silence. Through a mix of introspection, dialogue, and memories, the story highlights the pain of suppressed identity and the strength required to overcome it.
“Be Quiet, Little Black Girl” is not just a tale of struggle, but also one of resilience and empowerment. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of finding one’s voice, embracing vulnerability, and breaking free from the chains of silence to live authentically and boldly.
