I am thrilled to officially launch my new book 'Ó Fhonnadoireacht go Greanadoireacht' in my adopted hometown of Gorey this November. For this book I have chosen 30 Sean-nós songs as the inspiration for 30 new woodcut prints. I have had a life-long love of our sean-nós tradition for the stories that are passed to us and the unique ways that these personal and historical tales are told. Just as each song is a snapshot in time, each of my prints is an attempt to capture the essence of the songs story and the emotion imparted to us.
This book includes each of the 30 songs as Gaeilge alongside an English translation. I have also included background notes on the songs and nods to notable performances.
Carving these woodcut interpretations has been a project that has brought me great joy. My humble hope is that adding a traditional visual to each of these songs offers a new window through which the song can be experienced; enhancing the song for any curious mind who loves a good aul story well-told.
As I present this new book I am honoured to have the distinguished Wexford Harpist, Aileen Kennedy, join us on the night to perform some of the songs. We will also have performances from myself and some other wonderful local vocalists.
We would love it if you could join us for this celebration of song, music, art and tradition. All are welcome!
