About this Event
Content warning: This is a poem about the r*pe of Lucrece.
Shakespeare didn't just write plays and sonnets. He also wrote narrative poems. He reached back to his classical learning to bring us this episode from Roman history. It's the Roman monarchy, and the wicked Tarquins are in power. The Roman prince Sextus Tarquinius goes mad for the Lucrece, the wife of a Roman. Tarquinius' crime will end the Roman monarchy, and lead to the Roman Republic.
Shakespeare's poetic skills are at the most intense in his narrative poems. Not limited by the stage or by the conventions of dialogue, Shakespeare lets his descriptive powers shine. Join us to discuss his poem, Lucrece!
