This one means a lot to me...When I came to Nottingham University 20+ years ago I often went to screenings at The Savoy Cinema, seeing films such as Zathura: A Space Adventure, 28 Weeks Later, Bridge To Terabithia, The History Boys and even a special presentation of The Goonies. The Savoy was such an amazing cinema!
Back in the early 2010's I saw a documentary called Best Worst Movie about an ill fated horror film called Troll 2 and immediately had to watch this movie when the credits rolled. I was hooked and my obsession with cult 'bad movies' rapidly started to grow.
In early 2014 I booked the small private screening Lounge at Broadway Cinema and began rounding up people to chip in for a group screening of this goblin-tastic cult movie. It was so much fun that in May 2015 I screened it again, this time at the now distant memory - The Maze.
A few years later in 2021 lockdown came and along with my friends Stan and Raph, I started to watch regular cult 'bad movies' across Zoom to pass the time. Films like Santa With Muscles, Manos: The Hands of Fate and Reefer Madness.
It was this ever growing love for 'bad movies' that inspired me to start Notts Bad Movie Club with a couple of friends in 2022 - a film club that was to only screen bad movies. At the time we were accused of plagiarism which is funny really... this year will be 12 years since I first screened Troll 2! The third ever Notts Bad Movie Club screening was a double bill of my two favourite cult 'bad movies' - Mac & Me and Troll 2 - this quickly sold out! (check out the poster I made using my Christmas decorations)
When promoting this film I spent a long time trying to track down the cast and crew to record short intro videos; having success with quite a few of them. In the years that followed I've had several phone calls with the Dad from Troll 2 and am now Facebook friends with a couple of other cast members - who surreally wish me Happy Birthday once a year!
Boo The Bad Guy continues the age old tradition of screening 'bad movies' but I also show musicals, cult films, fun films - whatever I feel will create an exciting event. And that's the point - my sole focus has always been creating exciting events. If I can screen films like Tammy & The T-Rex to a brand new audience of 40 people AND break even - I'm happy!
This week I had the absolute pleasure of hosting two interviews on Zoom - one with George Hardy AKA Michael Waits from Troll 2 and the other with Darren Ewing AKA Arnold from Troll 2 - yes, the "Oh my gooooooddddddddd" guy!
When I worked in Blockbuster Video all those years ago I never knew that my obsession for nostalgic films (and more specifically a terrible goblin movie from 1990) would lead me on an ongoing adventure that has seen me host 40+ film screenings all over the country, receive almost 150 intro videos from the cast and crew of my favourite films (including Stephen Fry and Brian Blessed), interviewing loads of film directors (The Blair Witch Project, Ghostwatch, Tremors, Tremors 2, Creep, Grease, Child's Play, Idle Hands, The Flintstones, Drop Dead Fred, Drop Dead Gorgeous, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Mac & Me, Mean Girls, Wayne's World, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mike Quinn from Labyrinth and even Mathew Karedas from Samurai Cop... and many more...) plus having tapas with Greg Sestero (The Room), a fry up with Dian Bachar (BASEketball) and driving Lloyd Kaufman (The Toxic Avenger) with his wife Pat: The Film Commissioner of New York State & New York City around on a UK tour - which I helped organise and interview them on.
For the first time ever (for me) I'm bringing this epic film to the BIG screen and I couldn't be happier.
Thank you Troll 2, I can't wait to see what's next.
