We are pleased to host Faye Turner-Barnes for our seventh speaker in the Bonds That Matter seminar series.
About this Event

The series is designed to highlight the work of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) across the chemical sciences who hold intersectional identities. Our aim is to create a space where cutting-edge research and lived experiences are shared side by side.

All speakers are UK-based early-career chemical scientists within 8 years of their first academic appointment with intersectional identities. Join us as we hear their lived experiences and career journey whilst also connecting to peers through collaboration and networking. This event sponsored by Royal Society of Chemistry will be an in-person event.

Join us for a talk by Faye Turner-Barnes who was previously an Associate Scientist at Veranova in Cambridge. Her research focused on optimising early development pharmaceutical compounds by exploring their available crystalline polymorphs, including forming salts. This generally follows the process of first identifying the type of crystal (or lack of), undertaking a wide range of characterisation analyses, and then subjecting it to different solvents and physical conditions to examine the material’s polymorphic landscape. These new polymorphs are further characterised and, based on the client's specific needs, the best polymorph for further examination will be recommended.

In this talk, Faye will give an overview of her career path within the chemical sciences, having previously worked on superhard cutting materials and in a pharmacutical analytical lab. In addition, Faye is a neurodivergent trans woman, coming out and both socially and medically transitioning while at work. Whilst supported by colleagues in the scientific sector, she has often had to push for changes in workplace policy to be more inclusive and to act as the expert when asked whether something is adequate. She will share her experience, and some of the insights and lessons that she has learned along the way.

If you are interested in joining the speaker for lunch for discussion prior to the seminar, please get in contact!
