Bom~Bane’s Picture Palace - Screen, Supper & a Song for £17 (or £10 without food). Come and join us on May the 6th for an evening of film plus a musical performance related to what we’ll be watching!
Our first showing will be The Spirit of the Beehive.
Beautifully shot and accompanied by a beguiling soundtrack, The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena) is widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s.
In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of the country’s devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends the local cinema to watch James Whale’s ‘Frankenstein’ and becomes possessed by the memory of it.
As Ana retreats further into fantasy, she becomes increasingly detached from a family who seem unable to recover from the trauma of war and the bleak shadow of Franco’s Spain.
Produced in 1973 as Franco’s long regime was nearing its end, The Spirit of the Beehive is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.
