Are you anti-dieting curious?

Do you want to find freedom from food rules, try an anti-diet approach to life, and learn from others on their own journey to accepting their bodies?

You’re invited to join a community of people reclaiming their bodies and ending harmful cycles.

Come learn about different ways of being with your body and food through the support of a therapist-led group. Choose one 8-week section, or all that apply to your goals. Through this series of book club support groups you can expect to explore your relationship with your body, experiment with behavior change, and gain insight about yourself.

With all the great books on the topic, it’s hard to know what to choose and to reap the benefits of the content when reading individually and casually. Book clubs create a space to learn more about your reading through the perspective of others, and provide connection and understanding in a semi-structured space. Your facilitator Kayla brings her experience working along the spectrum of problematic eating patterns and disordered eating. She will guide these sessions with points of discussion from the book to deepen your understanding and prompt your reflection. Group members will be encouraged to share how the reading applies to their lives while seeking support from others.

Each week, we will cover a small portion of the section’s book over the course of 8 weeks. Be prepared to examine your approach to food, share your experience with others, and change your relationship with your body through learning and community.

Section 1: Anti-Diet by Christy Harrison *starting June 4*

This section is for you if this is your first time questioning diet culture and you’re curious about what else is out there. You will learn about the history of our culture’s body standards, the industries that profit off our ensuing self-destruction, and the many myths present in our collective understanding of health. This is also a great fit for health care professionals looking to dismantle unhelpful biases about weight, food, and health rampant in our healthcare system. This group is welcome to all genders, but content does engage with patriarchy and may at times feel most applicable to women.

Section 2: Reclaiming Body Trust by Hilary Kinavey and Dana Sturtevant

This section is for everyone of all genders who struggles in their relationship with their body, whether you are seeking extra support in eating disorder recovery, or trying to intervene on years of diet mentality. This book takes a social justice approach to understanding how our body acceptance is taken from us through our culture and how we can reclaim our bodies. This group will encourage members to practice changing their body image.

Section 3: How to Raise an Intuitive Eater: Raising the Next Generation with Food and Body Confidence by Sumner Brooks and Amee Severson

This group is meant for parents (and anyone raising children) that refuse to inflict the harsh standards and food morality of our culture upon the kids they love. Members will discuss strategies and share stories in service of healthy childhoods. All genders are welcome.

*Please note this group series is not appropriate for individuals actively continuing to seek intentional weight loss. We do not endorse the pursuit of purposeful weight loss in these groups. This group series is also not appropriate for anyone actively “in” their eating disorder who is not engaged in concurrent treatment or individual therapy. Feel free to reach out and ask if you’re wondering if this applies to you or if you have any questions.

I'm your group facilitator Kayla Hartman LSW, AM. I understand that it is important for many people to understand the background their facilitator comes from. I'm a straight-sized white, cis, queer woman. I love walking alongside all kinds of people as they overcome the restrictions placed on their lives by personal and collective body norms and expectations.
