Bobby Deerfield is a 1977 American romantic drama directed by twice Academy Award winner Sydney Pollack and starring Al Pacino and Marthe Keller. It is based on Erich Maria Remarque's 1961 novel Heaven Has No Favourites (his career defining work All Quiet on the Western Front was written in 1927).Heaven Has No Favourites is about the love story of Clerfayt, a racing car driver (Bobby in the film) and Lillian, a patient in the Swiss Alp sanatorium, where he comes to visit his co-driver. Childlike and rebellious, Lillian finds in him, with his indifference to anything but the next race, her passport to the outside world. The narrative moves them to Paris couturiers and the Italian and French resorts, with Lillian and, to a great extent, Clerfayt changing roles and goals under the impact of their relationship.
At the time of the film's release, Sydney Pollack was criticised by his American colleagues for an unusually European, arthouse style of the movie, which did not communicate well with a wider audience. However, Al Pacino was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. The movie also uses clips from the 1976 Formula One season.
