Loch Garten is renown as the site where in the late 1950s and early 1960’s Osprey became established as a regular breeding bird. This Talk will share the gripping tale of derring-do behind the comeback of this wonderful rapture, led by RSPBs George Waterston and many dedicated volunteer ornithologists, land-owners and locals. What followed was perhaps the UK’s first Eco-tourism venture and eventually led to the RSPB’s 2nd largest UK reserve. Ten years ago RSPB joined with other landowners to establish Cairngorms Connect, the UK’s biggest habitat restoration project covering 600 sq km and with a 200 year restoration ambition. Tonight’s Talk will recall the steps along the way, the ups and downs, the challenges and set backs and the success both with the numbers and spread of the Osprey across the UK and the stimulus this programme has given to wider conservation initiatives including rewilding and the creation of Cairngorms Connect.
Our speakers are Jess Tomes, initially a RSPB volunteer at Loch Garten back in 1995 and since 2015 manager of Loch Garten Nature Centre and Jeremy Roberts who joined RSPB as an advisory manager in 1997 progressed to be senior site manager at Abernethy before moving to become programme Manager with Cairngorms Connect in 2019. They will recount the early days of protecting nest sites, the shifts in approaches to engaging the public and share their enthusiasm and their commitment for the future - all this along with wonderful pictures and videos that capture the splendour of the Osprey and other wild life.
