The Blue & Gold Star Marker Program is a tribute program run by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC), to honor U.S. military service members and their families. We are gathering to pay tribute to our Armed Forces and to our fallen heroes.
BACKGROUND -
ABOUT the Blue Star Memorial Markers: These markers honor all those who have served, are serving, or will serve in the United States Armed Forces. The program began during World War II and initially involved planting trees. It later transformed into placing markers along highways, forming a Blue Star Memorial Highway system across the country.
ABOUT the Gold Star Markers: These markers pay tribute to Gold Star Families, which are families who have lost a loved one in service to the U.S. Armed Forces. The name Gold Star comes from a tradition where families hung service flags with blue stars for living service members and gold stars for those who died serving. NGC works with Gold Star Families to place these markers as a way to honor their fallen heroes.
Overall, the Blue & Gold Star Marker Program is a way for communities to show appreciation for the sacrifices made by military service members and their families.
