Blorenge & The Punchbowl: 'Mountain Views and Hidden Valleys'

Join us for a beautiful 7.5-mile circular walk exploring the dramatic landscape of the Blorenge (Mynydd Blorens) in the Brecon Beacons National Park. We begin high above Abergavenny at The Keeper’s Pond (Pen-ffordd-goch) — a man-made lake built in the early 19th century to supply water to the Garnddyrys Forge, now a much-loved spot for walkers, wild swimmers, and paddleboarders.
From here, we follow a gentle trail across open moorland to reach the summit of the Blorenge (561m). Starting high means the ascent is steady and surprisingly easy for such a commanding peak — one of the most accessible summits in the National Park. From the top, we’ll enjoy breathtaking views across the Vale of Usk, the Sugar Loaf, and on a clear day, even Pen y Fan.
We then descend into the secluded Punchbowl, a peaceful small glacial basin on the mountain’s eastern flank. This hidden amphitheatre, shaped by ancient ice, shelters a small lake surrounded by beech, oak, and rowan trees. It’s a haven for wildlife — keep an eye out for green woodpeckers, cuckoos, and soaring buzzards.
Our return route follows part of an old tramway, once used to transport iron and coal between the forges of Blaenavon and the canal below, offering a fascinating glimpse into the area’s past.
This walk combines mountain views, fascinating history, and wild natural beauty, all within a moderately paced day on the hills. The descent to the Punchbowl is the steepest section, but the rest of the route follows easy gradients with plenty of time to pause and take in the scenery.
Walk Grade: Moderate — includes one steeper descent but mostly easy gradients and open moorland paths.
