Discover more about Roger Fry and how the Bloomsbury Group helped shape new ideas in art, literature and design in the 20th century.
About this Event

Join writer and journalist Fiona McKenzie Johnston and curator Tim Martin for a richly insightful evening exploring the life, ideas, and legacy of Roger Fry and the Bloomsbury Group—one of the most influential artistic circles of the 20th century.

Fiona McKenzie Johnston is a writer and journalist. She is the author of ‘Roger Fry: Bloomsbury and the Invention of Modern Art’ (Triglyph Books, May 2026) and a Contributing Editor to House & Garden, where she produces and writes the magazine’s art pages.

About the Event

Enjoy a glass of wine or soft drink on arrival before settling in for an introductory talk by Fiona McKenzie Johnston as she introduces some of the themes from her newly published book.

Fiona will then be joined by Tim Martin, curator of 'A Life in Art: Roger Fry' for an 'In Conversation'. Together they will discuss Fry’s artistic legacy, the enduring influence of the Bloomsbury Group and the invention of modern art.

Exclusive Exhibition Access

Guests will enjoy exclusive after‑hours access to ‘A Life in Art: Roger Fry,’ on display at The Museum of Somerset until 4 July. It comes to the Museum from Charleston, Sussex, and showcases:

  • More than 40 vibrant works by Roger Fry
  • Rare loans and never‑before‑seen pieces from private collections
  • A special opportunity to view works by Fry’s wife, the artist Helen Coombe (1864–1937)

The evening concludes with a book signing with Fiona McKenzie Johnston—an ideal chance to take home a beautifully produced volume celebrating one of modern art’s pivotal figures.
